Ivanov and Paschall win 72nd Massachusetts Open

GM Alexander Ivanov and IM William Paschall are the 2003 Massachusetts co-champions as a result of their equal finish in the 72nd Massachusetts Open, which was held on Memorial Day weekend in Marlboro. Going into the last round Ivanov was in first place with 4½ points out of 5, having drawn with New Hampshire master Joshua Fridel in round 3. Paschall was in clear second place with 4, having lost to Ivanov in round 4. In the last round Ivanov played to a quick draw against FM and soon-to-be IM Igor Foygel and left without waiting to see Paschall catch up with him by beating Friedel. Ivanov is repeating as state champion, while Paschall last won the title in 1994.

Michael Odell and Richard Sansing tied for first in the Under 2000 section with 5-1 scores, Odell winning the state title in that section because Sansing is a New Hampshire resident; and Ernesto Gianola, ranked 19th in the section with a rating of only 1537, won the Under 1750 section, also with 5-1. There was an unusual finish in the Under 1500 section. Benjamin Felipe, who was unrated and therefore ineligible to win 1st or 2nd prize in the section, scored 5½ points and was awarded 3rd place. His son, Jaroz, tied for for first place with former MACA president Robert King, each scoring 5-1. However, since the Felipes are from Rhode Island, King won the Massachusetts title in that section. King's last round game with Jason Stoll was especially hard-fought, and was the last game in the tournament to finish.

In the one day sections, Neil Cousin won the Under 2000 section and Daniel Moraff won the Under 1300, both with 3½-½. Nathan Kessel won the K-12 Under 1500 scholastic section with 4-0, Christopher Berg-Jones won the K-6 Under 1400 with 3½-½, Andrew Robinson won the K-6 Under 800 with 4-0, Richard Han won the K-3 Under 1400 with 3½-½, and Max Senkovsky won the K-3 Under 800, also with 3½-½.

On Sunday night Paschall won the Massachusetts Speed Championship with a score of 8½-1½ after coming in late and taking a 1-1 bye in the first round in this five round double Swiss G/5 tournament. He gave up his only draw in the second round to Rhode Island junior Michael Clark, who finished second with 8-2, and beat FM William Kelleher by 2-0 in the last round to clinch his victory.

Tournament attendance was down compared with last year's event, with 103 in the 3-day tournament, 111 in the 1-day and scholastic sections, and 19 in the speed tournament. Bob Messenger directed for the Massachusetts Chess Association, assisted by Steve Frymer.

Foygel Wins Massachusetts Game/60 Championship

FM Igor Foygel won the Massachusetts Game/60 Championship with a score of 3½-½, which included a win over GM Alexander Ivanov in round 2 and a draw with IM William Paschall in round 3. (Foygel has qualified for the International Master title, but this won't be official until the next FIDE congress.) In the last round Foygel beat expert Tomas Girnius, while Paschall could only draw against FM William Kelleher, who had beaten Ivanov in round 3. Paschall and Kelleher tied for second with 3-1 scores.

Stanimir Ilic swept the Under 2000 section 4-0, while Vladimir Clue, playing in his first USCF rated tournament, won the Under 1700 with 3½-½. The Under 1400 section ended in a four way tie between MACA Grand Prix winner Michael Kaye, Lazar Ilic, Dana Monnier, and Terry O'Neill, all with 3½-½.

There were a total of 53 players in the tournament, which was held in March at the Natick Senior Center. Bob Messenger directed for the Massachusetts Chess Association, assisted by Steve Frymer.
