Each year, the top-scoring Massachusetts resident or student in the Championship section of the Mass. Open is awarded the title of State Champion and ownership of the official state champion trophy until the following year's Mass Open, where the trophy is returned and the next winner is decided.
The state champion trophy was originally named after 8-time Western MA/CT Valley champion and candidate master Eli Bourdon (1907-1980). In 2026, the state champion trophy underwent a full restoration and was renamed the John Curdo Memorial Trophy in honor of 17-time Massachusetts champion FM John Curdo (1931-2022).
The John Curdo Memorial Trophy has the following names of Massachusetts State Champions engraved in plates attached to the trophy.
