Board of Directors Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 7:30pm

Boylston Chess Club, 40 Norris St., Cambridge, MA and via Zoom

ATTENDEES: Andrew Hoy (President, Budget Chair), Steven Winer (Vice President), Robert Messenger (Treasurer, Membership Secretary), Jeff Caruso (Clerk, Elections Chair), and Directors Paul Arond, Latanya Sweeney (Education Chair), and Yi Wang.

CALLED TO ORDER at 7:33 p.m.

1. Minutes

MOTION (AH/RM): to approve the minutes of the January 12, 2022 Board meeting.  Passed 7-0.

2. Upcoming tournaments

Mr. Hoy led a discussion of arrangements for upcoming tournaments.  The Winter Team Challenge is this weekend (February 20) and is all set.  We also reviewed the 3rd and 4th Spiegel Cup Qualifiers (March 6 and April 10), the Massachusetts G/60 Championship (March 20), the Massachusetts Open (May 28-30), and discussed possible venues and dates for the Hurvitz Cup tournament, the Girls’ Championship, and the Spiegel Cup final.

3. Treasurer and Membership Reports

Mr. Messenger presented the Membership Report and Treasurer’s Report, as well as financial reports for the Gus Gosselin and Girls’ Qualifier tournaments. (see below)

4. Elections Commission

Mr. Caruso presented the Elections Commission Report. (see below)

5. Education Committee

Prof. Sweeney briefly outlined some initiatives of the Education Committee. She has been in contact with former Education Committee chair Nathan Smolensky and several activities are planned with the goal of setting up chess clubs in schools, possibly involving lichess.org, providing chess equipment, and training and certifying teachers who would lead these clubs.

6. Budget Committee

Mr. Hoy appointed new members to the Budget Committee: Mr. Arond, Mr. Caruso, and Mr. Messenger.

7. Vaccination protocols for tournaments

The board deferred action on any requirement of vaccinations.  For the time being we will plan to continue the mask mandate for tournaments.

Mr. Winer departed the meeting.

8. Boylston Chess Club

Mr. Hoy reported that the Boylston Chess Club is no longer pursuing the property in Medford and is now exploring a site in downtown Boston. There is no proposal yet for how MACA might wish to be involved.

9. Vote of thanks

MOTION (JC/AH)   Whereas our past President and longtime Board member Steven Frymer is not running for re-election, the Massachusetts Chess Association extends a vote of thanks to Steven Frymer for his more than five decades of devoted service to Massachusetts chess and to MACA. Passed 6-0.

10. Next meeting

Unanimous consent motion (AH): the next meeting will take place on March 16, 2022, at 7:30pm at the Boylston Chess Club, 40 Norris St., Cambridge, MA. Passed without objection.

ADJOURNED at 8:38 pm.
