MACA Board Meeting

President Ken Ballou called the meeting to order at approximately 6:00 p.m. Present were Clerk Brian Mottershead, Treasurer Bob Messenger, Directors Alex Relyea, Steve Frymer, Stephen Dann, and Ken Belt, and guest Nita Patel.
The board approved the minutes of the August meeting.
Mr. Messenger presented the treasurer’s report. There was a loss in August of $338.56 in the General Fund and $927.93 overall, with total fund balances of $50,270.34. The MACA Auction held in conjunction with the New England Open brought in net income of $731.25.
Mr. Messenger presented the membership secretary’s report. There were 756 members, 604 people receiving Chess Horizons, and 1097 people with current expiration dates in the database.
Mr. Ballou reported for the Tournament Committee that the Greater Boston Open would be held Sunday, October 31, at the Kennedy Senior Center in Natick and that the Harry Nelson Pillsbury Memorial would be held Sunday, November 28, at the Leominster Veterans Center. He reported that contracts were in place for both sites and that a TLA had been placed in Chess Life for the Pillsbury Memorial.
Mr. Ballou reported for the Scholastic Committee that the first Spiegel Cup qualifier would be held October 3, the tentative site being the Best Western Hotel in Waltham (still awaiting contract; the event was actually held at the Boys and Girls Club in Hudson); the second qualifier would be held November 14 at the Holiday Inn Select in Woburn; and that the third qualifier would be held December 5, also at the Holiday Inn Select in Woburn. He reported that the scholastic committee had proposed the following dates for the remaining scholastic tournaments for the 2010-2011 school year:

01/23/2011 Holiday Team Challenge
02/06/2011 Spiegel Cup and Gosselin Grade Championship (?)
03/06/2011 Gosselin Grade Championship (?)
04/02/2011 Hurvitz Cup Championship
Mr. Frymer and Mr. Messenger presented the budget committee report:
Report of the MACA Budget Committee
September 19th 2010
1. The budget committee recommends the rejection of both Brian
Mottershead's amendment to the motion creating a Chess Horizons Fund and
the main motion.
2. The budget committee was unable to agree on a single budget proposal.
Instead it reports two budgets, "Budget 1" and "Budget 2" below, and
asks the Executive Board to choose between them (see attachment).
After debate and unsuccessful attempts at amendment, Mr. Mottershead’s amendment to the motion creating a Chess Horizons Fund and the main motion (motion 0710-2, referred to the budget committee at the August meeting) did not pass; instead the board approved “Budget 1” in the committee report without amendments.
At the suggestion of former President George Mirijanian, Mr. Messenger moved that $35 be transferred from the General Fund to the Living Memorial Chess Fund to honor Andrus Varnik for his donation of books for the MACA Auction. The motion passed.
The board decided that its next meeting would be held on October 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the Papa Gino’s on Route 9 in Natick.
