MACA Board Meeting Minutes
September 6th 2018

President Nathan Smolensky called the meeting to order at 7:12 p.m. Present were Vice President John Sadoff, Treasurer Bob Messenger and Directors Jeff Caruso, Dmitry Barash, Jiayun Liu, and Steve Winer. Director Percy Yip arrived at 7:26 p.m.
 
The board approved the minutes of the June meeting
 
There was a vacancy on the board due to the resignation of Director Oleg Poliannikov.
 
MOTION 0918-1: Move to appoint Paul Arond to fill the vacant position on the MACA board pending his acceptance. (?/?) An amendment to strike the words “pending his acceptance” (Messenger/Winer) was accepted as friendly. The main motion then PASSED 8-0.
 
Treasurer’s Report
 
Mr. Messenger presented his report for May to July 2018, with net expense of $1,360.21, $88,885.46 total assets; $80.00 liabilities; and $88,805.46 total fund balances.
 
MOTION 0918-2: Move to accept the treasurer’s report. (Caruso/Smolensky) PASSED 7-0-1.
 
Membership Report
 
Mr. Messenger presented the membership report for September 209 adults, 555 juniors, 201 life, for a total of 965 members; 5 affiliates, 1 complimentary, 3 library, 48 subscriptions, 13 exchange, 447 prison, for a total of 517 non-members in the database; grand total of 1482 current in the database.
 
Tournament and Scholastic Committees
 
There was a discussion about the need for better coordination between the tournament and scholastic committees in choosing tournament dates and locations.
 
MOTION 0918-3: Move to change the format for the Massachusetts Girls Championship to a six player round robin, G/90 +30, two days. (Liu/Winer) Move to refer to the Scholastic Committee. (Smolensky/Messenger). An amendment to add “to report at the next board meeting” was accepted as friendly. The motion to REFER then PASSED.
 
Web Coordinator
 
Nathan Smolensky was nominated to replace Oleg Poliannikov as Web Coordinator. There were no other nominations. Mr. Smolensky was ELECTED 8-0.
 
US Chess Delegates
 
The following candidates were nominated in an ordered list to serve as Delegates to the US Chess Federation: 1. Ken Ballou. 2. Bob Messenger. 3. Dmitry Barash. There were no other nominations. The nominated candidates were APPOINTED 7-0-1.
 
The meeting was adjourned at 8:57 p.m.
