Annual Meeting Minutes

May 31, 2021

President Oleg Poliannikov called the meeting to order at 9:05 a.m. via Zoom.

Attending: Vice President Steven Winer, Treasurer Robert Messenger, Clerk Andrew Hoy, Directors Jeffrey Caruso, Yi Wang, and Nicholas Sterling, MACA members George Mirijanian, Stephen Dann, Alonzo Ross, Natasha Christiansen, Larry Christiansen, Robert E. King, Dmitri Barash, and Larry Pratt, and former member Bernardo Iglesias.

Election Results.  Mr. Caruso presented the elections report.  The following candidates were elected:

President:              Andrew Hoy

Vice President:     Steven Winer

Treasurer:             Robert Messenger

Clerk:                    Jeffrey Caruso

Directors:              Paul Arond, Steven Frymer, Nicholas Sterling,
Prof. Latanya Sweeney, Yi Wang, Prathiba Yuvarajan, Oleg Poliannikov, and GM Fidel Corrales Jimenez

Officers-elect and Directors-elect take up their positions at the end of the Annual Meeting.  An informal motion to “accept” the report was passed 13-0-3.

Committee and Officer Reports.  Mr. Messenger presented the Treasurer’s Report and the Membership Report.  Mr. Sterling and Mr. Poliannikov made some remarks in lieu of a Scholastics Committee report, as follows:

Spiegel Cup 2020 Finals and MA Girls’ Championship were held online

            Spiegel Qualifiers 1 & 2 for 2021 were held online May 22-23

They include HS, 14+U, and 11+U sections but not 8+U

Spiegel Qualifiers 3 & 4 will be held online June 5-6

Spiegel Cup 2021 Finals will be held in person at the Boylston Chess Club

Massachusetts Open.  Mr. Poliannikov stated a proposal to hold an over-the-board Massachusetts Open tournament in the fall. There were numerous suggestions and comments from members, including:

·       The Labor Day weekend is normally the time for the New England Open.

·       The Columbus Day weekend is normally the time for a Western Massachusetts Chess Association event.

·       It is possible to use a non-holiday weekend, Friday through Sunday, for the Massachusetts Open.

·       We do not yet know how many people will be comfortable coming to an over-the-board event.

·       The question of whether to require vaccinations is complex. At a minimum we will comply with protocols required by health authorities, the hotel, and our insurance carrier.

General Discussion.  Mr. Mirijanian asked how many Board meetings have taken place in the last year. There were between 3 and 5. Mr. Poliannikov committed to posting Board minutes online.

Several members questioned the decision to remove the 8+Under section from scholastic events. Mr. Hoy explained that this was a decision taken in February based on our desire to schedule an over-the-board Spiegel Cup Final within the COVID limitations that were in place at the time.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:59 a.m.
