Arthur A. King Jr. of Haverhill, MA,

former MACA member dies at 69

Arthur A. King Jr., a Class A-rated USCF member and former MACA member, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019 at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill. He was born on Jan. 20, 1950 in Haverhill, the son of Arthur and Shirley (Ellis) KIng, and grew up and was educated there, graduating from Haverhill High School in 1967. He attended UMass-Boston, where he earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. He had retired as a tester for Lucent Technologies Inc. in Massachusetts. Early in his youth Arthur learned chess and got lots of help from chess expert, teacher and chess columnist Orlando A. "Bud" Lester, who wrote a chess column for the Boston Herald and earlier one for the Haverhill Gazette. Arthur started playing in USCF-rated tournaments many years ago but then took time off from over-the-board competition before returning to active play in October 1991, when he renewed his USCF membership and was given a new USCF ID number, since a rating for him from the past could not be found. His rating was thought to be about 1585. So he entered as an "unrated" the Under 1600 section of the 2nd annual Massachusetts Game/60 Open, directed by MACA legend, multi-time MACA President Gilbert F. "Gus" Gosselin, and held in Tewksbury. Arthur finished in clear 4th place. The main reason for him to start playing again was to accompany his nephew, Randi Malcuit, a high school student who played in the Under 1200 section of the tournament and came in clear 1st. Besides playing in weekend tournaments in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, Arthur became most active by playing in weeknight tournaments at chess clubs in Newburyport and Billerica. His newspaper and funeral home obituary acknowledges the man who taught him much more about chess - very much more - and whom he considered his chess hero by stating that Arthur "was fortunate enough to have had lessons with his idol, John Curdo, a master chess player." Arthur became a Class A-rated player.

Besides his wife, Karen R. Krikorian, Arthur leaves among his survivors three nephews, including Randi Malcuit, owner of Stateline Chess Books & Equipment in New Hampshire.

Calling hours will be held Friday, Nov. 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen, MA. A service will be held at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, followed by burial in St. Patrick Cemetery in Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salem Animal Rescue League, 4 Sari Drive, Salem, NH 03079, or to MACAs' "LIving Memorial Chess Fund" (LMCF), c/o Robert Messenger, Treasurer, 4 Hamlett Drive, Apt. 12, Nashua, NH 03062-4641. Checks payable to "MACA."

10/28/2019: Carissa Yip makes chess history; becomes youngest female IM in USA

Carissa Yip, the 16-year-old Woman Grandmaster from Andover, Mass., made chess history on Sunday, October 27, at the Days Inn in Saint Louis, where she made her 3rd and final IM norm in the 13th annual SPICE Cup to become the youngest female International Master in U.S. chess history. The title will be awarded by the World Chess Federation, better known by its acronym, FIDE, at its next congress. The former Wachusett CC and Boylston CC champion won her final-round game against Rubens Cezila Jr. of Brazil to finish with a score of 5-4. Winning this year's SPICE Cup was 20-year-old GM Akshat Chandra of the United States. He scored 6.5-2.5. Six players tied for 2nd-7th with 6-3 tallies. They were GM Illya Nyzhnik, 23, of Ukraine; GM Jan-Christian Schroeder, 21, of Germany; GM John Burke, 18, of New Jersey; IM Nikolas Theodorou, 19, of Greece; GM Emilio Cordova, 28, of Peru; and GM Lazaro Bruzon Batista, 37, of Cuba. The tournament was organized by former Women's World Champion Susan Polgar, head of the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) at Webster University in Saint Louis.

10/26/2019: Carissa Yip still half point behind leaders in 13th annual SPICE Cup

After six rounds of play in the 13th annual SPICE Cup in Saint Louis, former Wachusett CC and Boylston CC champion Carissa Yip still remains only a half point behind the leaders, GMs Jan-Christian Schroeder (2572) of Germany, Emilio Cordova (2571) of Peru and Akshat Chandra (2513). All three have scores of 4.5-1.5. Carissa is tied with two GMs and three IMs at 4-2 and will be playing in Round 7 on Board 5, when she faces IM Nikolas Theodorou (2541) of Greece, whom she was originally paired with in Round 6, but pairings were changed and she faced GM Illya Nyzhnik (2665) of Ukraine, the highest-rated player in the tournament, who won this year's U.S. Open in Florida. She drew Nyzhnik! In Round 7, Chandra will face Cordova on Board 1 and Schroeder will play GM Yuniesky Quesada Perez (2615) on Board 2. Nyzhnik is paired against one of the IMs at 4-2 and will play on Board 3. The 9-round tournament ends on Sunday, October 27th.

09/22/2019: Three more tournaments are added in MA Scholastic Grand Prix

New England School of chess, PerelChess, and Boylston Chess Clubs are the latest organizers who added their tournaments to Massachusetts Scholastic Grand Prix. This Series is perfect for beginner and interpediate players to test their chess skills in a competitive environment. Players who get the first three places in Grand Prix will receive trophies and free entries to MACA flagship event Massachusetts Open. In addition, players who have played in the most tournaments over the course of the season will receive a separate prize. Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend as many tournaments as you can.

First Spiegel Cup Qualifier will take place on September 29, 2019. Among the new rules this season are:

There is now a 1200 minimum rating to play in the 14 & Under and 11 & Under qualifier sections. Every game is a fight!
Booster sections are now called Reserve sections
The time control for the Reserve Under 1200 section is now G/45, d5. It's still G/30, d5 for U800 and U400

09/6/2019: Future Masters Chess Academy kicks off MA Scholastic Grand Prix

MACA has retired Spiegel Cup Series, and launched a new Massachusetts Scholastic Grand Prix. The rules of the Grand Prix are available here. The first tournament will be held by Future Masters Academy. Come play your peers and earn points towards Grand Prix. More Grand Prix tournaments are coming up. Every Spiegel Cup Qualifier is part of the Grand Prix as well.

04/29/2019: Kelsey Liu wins Massachusetts Girls Championship

Massachusetts Girls Championship took place on April 27-28 in Boylston Chess Club. Top Massachusetts girls competed for the title of Massachusetts Girls Champion and a qualification to represent Massachusetts in National Girls Tournament of Champions in Orlando this summer.

Kelsey Liu (4.5) had a dominating performance, won the first 4 rounds, and secured the title with one round to go. She drew Joy Cao in the last round. Amy Lei (3.5) lost only to Kelsey in the fourth round, and ended up with the second place with 3 wins and a draw. Tianna Wang (3.0) had a rough start with two losses, but bounced back with three consecutive wins, and earned the third place. The youngest player Riya Kanuri put up a great fight every round, drew her second and fourth rounds.

All players and parents gave very positive feedback on this tournament, and thanked MACA for organizing this tournament.

Thanks also go to Robb Stewart and Bernardo Iglesias for directing this tournament. They did an excellent job at making the tournament run smoothly. Robb presented the trophies to the winners.

03/19/2019: 2019 MACA Election - Candidate Statements

Oleg Poliannikov, candidate for President:

MACA is a great institution that remains the leading force promoting and organizing chess in Massachusetts. It also serves a lot of chess players from CT, NH, and RI. With such an impact, we must improve the way MACA does business for the benefit of hundreds of players: present and future.

Among the problems that need to be urgently addressed are: the calendar, the website, the future of the Prison Program after Chess Horizons is no longer published, coordination with clubs and independent organizers, and increasing the number of tournaments (run by MACA or independents) for all players from novices to the 2000+ rated scholastic elite.

My immediate goal is to have tournaments scheduled and announced at least 6 months in advance. I will work with existing and potential TDs to have more people certified and available to direct in order to simplify scheduling and running chess tournaments. I will work with Prison Chess to design a new program that fulfills MACA's firm commitment to charity. MACA will have a new website and a much improved online presence.

I ask for your support, feedback, criticism, and participation. Time is of the essence.

I am looking to help grow Massachusetts chess even further. There has already been much success for players in the state, but there is still more we can do to reach even greater success.

Dmitry Barash, candidate for Director (incumbent):

I’m running for the board for the 6th consecutive time. I worked in Scholastic Committee all these years and help to schedule and run tournaments for kids.

In the last 5 years overall tournament attendance (including scholastic) went up.

The main MA Championship Spiegel Cup becomes stronger by rating each year.

Many kids successfully represent MA in National events.

Though we have room for improvement by running more tournaments for unrated kids, and for elite players too. We can also automate adding preregistered list of players online.

Service, fairness, transparency. As Elections Commissioner and MACA board member I have delivered these for you. Please vote for me again so that I can continue to serve you.

Our candidates include a strong field of volunteers. I support the current board members who are running again, as well as Oleg Poliannikov, who was an active board member from January 2017 to July 2018, and newcomers Stewart, Yuvarajan and Wang, who are all active promoters of chess in Massachusetts.

My history of MACA service, my past service as director and president make me uniquely qualified to be beneficial for MACA. I have had a great history of promoting my hobbies, and I know a lot more needs to be done in the future as I am continuing with my plans. I am working on a couple of books, including a chess book. I have been taking on the on-line chess world and those games are being compiled for the book. I have been teaching chess in Plymouth, and my friend Eric has played in two USCF rated adult tournaments.

My interest in joining MACA's Board of Directors will serve three goals:

To leverage my overall experience and connections as a lifelong Massachusetts resident and chess player with 30+ years playing experience;

To bring insights to the Board from my roles as chess tutor and coach, school program director, and scholastic and club tournament director, and parent;

To share my qualifications as a business professional with strong communication skills, leadership qualities, financial acumen and superior organizational skills.

Prathiba Yuvarajan, candidate for Director

As a coach, International Woman Master and mother I want to promote chess in all aspects for all age groups. I will do my best to promote chess in schools with curriculum classes, after school programs, tournaments and camps. As I mastered in Cognitive Science I understand how chess helps kids in learning and improving scores at schools and other activities. My main goal is to encourage all kids to learn the game and provide more opportunities at professional level. Currently I am the owner and coach of ChessEmpireKids (www.chessempirekids.com). I teach kids at various schools in MA and NH.

The Massachusetts Chess Association is now accepting nominations for the annual election of its 12-member board, to serve from June 2019 to June 2020. Members may stand for election for one of its 4 officer positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer or Clerk) or 8 Director positions. The submission deadline for nominations is February 15, 2019. In order to be eligible to run, memberships must be valid through the end of the upcoming term (June 2020).

01/29/2019: Massachusetts Chess Association Election Registration

The annual MACA elections will occur in May 2019. Registered voters will receive either a paper ballot or an e-ballot link at the end of April, with results being announced at the Massachusetts Open on Memorial Day weekend. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED FOR BOTH VOTING OPTIONS.

If you registered to vote in prior years, you do not need to register again unless your address has changed. New members who joined MACA after March 2018 will need to register to vote in this year's election.

Members can register for an online or paper ballot (not both) as follows:
